Office Clients – May 26 News
In May, the spotlight is again on the workload your users notice first – long before anyone opens Message Center.
Office clients are changing in several places at once: OneDrive, Excel, Word and Outlook.
A quiet but visible shift in sync scale, reliability, collaboration and secure communication.
What’s moving this month:
- OneDrive on Windows → Sync support towards around 1 million items per device for eligible hardware – large libraries suddenly become more realistic to handle.
- Excel Desktop → Without the required build, Power Platform Analytical Dataflows gradually lose connectivity from the end of May onwards.
- Word → Lock‑free coauthoring removes most paragraph‑level conflicts – collaborative writing becomes noticeably smoother.
- Outlook → New Outlook stores S/MIME certificates directly in contacts, and in Classic Outlook the expanded people card view is retired in June – the compact card remains.
In other words: changes your users will feel – whether you have communicated them yet or not.
📅 Rollout window:
Already rolling → June 2026 (including the Excel build deadline at the end of May and the people card retirement in June).
Short, human, and absolutely no release-note trauma.
